De Appelgaard is a farm in the Voer region, half of which, the former cow and pig stables, has been converted into group accommodation. Where the animals once stood, eighteen people now sleep. The house sits among apple trees and old high-stem pear trees, at a crossroads of walking and cycling routes. There are eight bedrooms. Six have their own bathroom, the other two share one. For a group of eighteen that is generous, and it shows in the morning. The heart of the house is the large living room with an open fireplace, with the kitchen adjoining it. There is a separate playroom for the youngest guests, and a library for anyone who wants it quieter. A table football is ready for rainy afternoons. The kitchen is set up for a group: oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, coffee machine and kettle. You will also find a high chair and a cot, extra pillows and blankets, and plenty of hangers. The terrace faces south, which means you can sit in the sun there even in midwinter. The garden gives children room to run. A barbecue, garden furniture and loungers are provided. Parking is on the grounds, and there is an open shed for bicycles, useful because the house sits on a junction of the cycle network. Very large groups may pitch tents in the garden. De Appelgaard is in Sint-Martens-Voeren, in the middle of the triangle formed by Aachen, Liège and Maastricht. Maastricht is twenty minutes away, Liège and Aachen half an hour each. The Voer region itself is hilly and quiet, with sunken lanes and long views that are rare elsewhere in Flanders. Walkers and cyclists set off straight from the door. Practical: bookings start from three nights. A dog is welcome at fifty euros per animal, to be ticked when booking. Check-in can be done on your own, so there is no waiting for a key handover. A fire extinguisher and a first aid kit are in the house. This is a house for people who come in numbers: a family weekend, a group of friends, a cycling club. Anyone looking for quiet and space without a long drive is in the right place, because three cities are within half an hour.
